One of my favorite thinkers/writers/teachers Mark Joyner has just launched an online elearning program for blogging and he’s giving it away to anyone who blogs about it. Pure genius. Why? Because I will do anything to get free access to whatever Mark is teaching–he is that good. Anyway, if you’re interested in knowing more about Mark, just Google him. In the next few days his blogging course will probably be the top listing… Here’s a brief summary:
I’m evaluating a multi-media course on blogging from the folks at Simpleology. For a while, they’re letting you if you post about it on your blog.
It covers:
- The best blogging techniques.
- How to get traffic to your blog.
- How to turn your blog into money.
I’ll let you know what I think once I’ve had a chance to check it out. Meanwhile, go grab yours while it’s still free.

Coincidentally, he mentioned one of my favorite blogs “AdRants”, which I check for information for my advertising and marketing recruitment work, and how the person behind that is making a living from that blog! Small world indeed.

Last week while I was surfing the Internet for music clips that I can use for the weekly PowerUp English podcasts, I came across an article announcing Carlos Santana’s upcoming release of his latest album. I have always been a great admirer of his music and I look forward to getting my copy when it is available in Tokyo.
Here’s a bit of trivia about Santana. The Mexico-born musician, who sold 90 million albums worldwide, at first refused to leave his native land for the U.S.A as he wanted to pursue his independence as a musician at the young age of 13. His family prevailed over him and he went on to study high school in San Francisco. But surprisingly, he began to learn English not from school — but from TV. In one of his interviews he related the said experience, “We didn’t have one, but a neighbor did. The first English words I learned were ‘Stick ‘em up!’ It was Roy Rogers.”
Isn’t it amazing that someone who first learned English from TV would someday turn out to be a world-renowned and multi-awarded musician, selling millions of albums worldwide?

As a basketball fan, I am amazed at how Yao Ming has come a long way from China to become one of the more famous NBA stars of our time. I searched the Internet for stories of his success and learned about his struggles in adapting to the Western culture and language. I learned that his five years of English lessons and U.S. trips (for smaller leagues) explains why adapting to a new culture and language was quicker for him. In Yao’s first meeting with the Rockets, his teammates were even surprised to see that Yao could converse in English better that expected.
No wonder it was so easy to endear himself to basketball fans around the world. Credit for his perseverance goes to him and his ever-supportive parents who actually had him enrolled for English lessons as soon as they arrived in the U.S. Three points for Yao and his parents!
